We help patients overcome unexplained infertility and build healthy families
The doctors at our Indianapolis fertility clinic often help patients move past the challenge of unexplained infertility. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, 5% to 10% of couples trying to conceive have no infertility diagnosis.
It can be frustrating for patients to not know why they’re having fertility struggles. However, the specialists at our clinic can use various treatments to help patients with this problem fulfill the dream of parenthood.
Fertility evaluations at our clinic help doctors diagnose unexplained infertility
Before making a diagnosis, our doctors will recommend fertility evaluations to help them rule out common causes of infertility. These tests can confirm that issues involving a patient’s ovarian reserve, uterus, fallopian tubes and other aspects of their fertility aren’t impacting their ability to build a family. Patients contributing sperm also undergo fertility evaluations.
Transvaginal ultrasound. Ultrasound allows the doctor to assess a patient’s uterus and ovaries.
Bloodwork. Our doctors utilize blood tests to evaluate a patient’s reproductive hormones.
Hysterosalpingogram (HSG). If the doctor suspects issues with a patient’s fallopian tubes or uterus, they might recommend an HSG. This is a simple radiology procedure.
Laparoscopy. This minimally invasive surgical evaluation helps doctors determine if a patient has issues like endometriosis or fibroids.
Semen analysis. Patients with testes will have a semen analysis to confirm the quality and quantity of their sperm.
If these fertility tests don’t reveal any fertility issues, a doctor at our Indianapolis fertility clinic will likely provide a diagnosis of unexplained infertility.
How we can help patients with no clear infertility diagnosis conceive a healthy baby
Patients with this diagnosis have many treatment options. These treatments can enhance ovulation, increase the chance of sperm fertilizing an egg and support other aspects of conception.
In vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF is one of the most effective fertility treatments for unexplained infertility. It consists of the patient taking ovulation induction medications while receiving monitoring at our Indianapolis fertility clinic. When enough eggs mature, the doctor retrieves them. They send the eggs to the IVF lab. There, an embryologist fertilizes them with sperm from the patient’s partner or donor. The doctor then transfers an embryo into the patient’s uterus.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI). Depending on the patient’s unique needs, the doctor might recommend they try IUI before IVF. This procedure involves the doctor using a catheter to insert sperm from the patient’s partner or donor into the uterus around the time they ovulate.
IUI and clomiphene citrate. In some situations, doctors recommend patients stimulate ovulation with the medication clomiphene citrate, or Clomid, before undergoing IUI.
IUI and gonadotropin medications. Taking gonadotropin injections before the IUI is an effective option for many patients. These injections typically cause multiple eggs to develop. After the eggs grow to the ideal size, the patient takes medication that causes the eggs to release and has the IUI a day or two later.
These treatments often result in patients moving past unexplained infertility and fulfilling the dream of taking home a healthy baby. Contact us to get an infertility diagnosis and treatment.
