Adenomyosis

Our clinic helps patients move past the struggle of adenomyosis

The specialists at our Indianapolis fertility clinic treat patients with adenomyosis. This condition occurs when the endometrial tissue of the uterus grows into the muscular portion of the uterus. Common symptoms of this fertility issue include abdominal pressure, bloating before periods and heavy cramping during periods.

Our doctors typically use ultrasound to diagnose this fertility challenge. Using this test, our doctors can see if the patient has an enlarged uterus with an abnormally thickened uterine wall, which is indicative of this condition. Risk factors include a history of surgeries like a c-section or myomectomy for fibroid removal.

Learn how adenomyosis relates to endometriosis

This fertility issue is similar to endometriosis, which is when the endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus. Endometriosis affects about 10% of people with ovaries. It can cause discomfort and issues with ovulation and the fallopian tubes.

While endometriosis has a significant effect on a person’s fertility, adenomyosis doesn’t always pose as much of a problem. However, when this condition significantly changes the shape of the uterus, it could make it more difficult for the embryo to implant.

A person who does not hope to conceive now or in the future can have a hysterectomy. This procedure removes the uterus. Additional options include the use of hormonal medications, uterine artery embolization, endometrial ablation and MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery.

Treating this condition in people who do want to conceive is more difficult, as it is impossible to surgically separate the abnormal endometrial tissue from the uterine muscle. If a patient only has a collection of abnormal endometrial tissue, an experienced surgeon can sometimes remove the patch of tissue.

After diagnosing this condition, a doctor at our Indianapolis fertility clinic can help the patient make a plan for taking the next step toward parenthood. Contact us for more information about how we support patients with adenomyosis.
